Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The 1970s were tumultuous years in American prisons, beginning with the bloody uprising at Attica and ending with the even bloodier one at New Mexico State. The Massachusetts prison system was one of the most seriously afflicted. Murders, suicides, riots, strikes, and mass escapes were only the most obvious manifestations of a system in turmoil.

CHOICE Review

Kauffman's Harvard PhD thesis served as the basis for this excellent critical examination of correction officer (CO) and his/her world. The author's own experience as a CO served her well in writing an empathetic, insightful account of the multifaceted role of the CO. Although this work focuses on the Massachusetts prison system of the 1970s, the issues that Kauffman uncovers confront COs in most prisons most of the time. Through her use of excerpts from interviews throughout the text, the author allows COs to speak for themselves and to explore such issues as the officer code, prison violence, recruits and their values, and effects of prison employment. There is a large body of scholarly literature on penal institutions and inmates, but very little has been written that sheds light on the problems and perspectives of the CO. In a clear and straightforward manner, Kauffman has written an important work for researchers, students, and general readers who want to explore the world of the CO. -P.
