CHOICE Review

Messerschmidt sees male crime as an extension of rather than a discontinuity with masculity; it is a way of "doing" the male role for men lacking crucial resources. Every action is seen as "gendered." If a man commits a crime, he is "doing" masculinity. If a woman does the same thing, she is "doing" a specific type of feminity. To Messerschmidt's credit, he does not see all men (or all women) as inhabiting precisely the same category; there are the crude but crucial qualifiers--race, class, age, and so on. Readers learn, for instance, that Oliver North and the Los Angeles street cops who beat up Rodney King "constructed" two different types of masculinities through their actions (as if Colonel North might have beaten up Iranian officials, and the Los Angeles police could have negotiated an illegal arms deal with Rodney King!). The first two chapters, which summarize and analyze the literature on gender and crime and on the history of feminism, are suprisingly sophisticated, informative, and valuable. Judging from the symmetry of the book's title, this reviewer expected much more discussion of the conjunction of crime and gender and much less on gender itself. Graduate; faculty. E.
