An impressive accomplishment--over 1,000 thoroughly researched entries from the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking areas of the New World, and from the colonial period to the 1980s. The cross-referenced terms and expressions refer to physical type, skin color, national or geographic origin, social class, and religion. Dispels the myth about the lack of discrimination in Latin America. Annotation(c) 2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Library Journal Review

Stephens provides, for the first time, a detailed etymology of Spanish and Portuguese words used for racial and ethnic purposes in Latin America. The work is divided into two sections, Portuguese and Spanish, and is completely cross-indexed so that references to any other word in the book, where relevant, are listed boldface in the definition. Stephens also cites sources for word usage, and where possible, provides the context in which the word is used. An invaluable reference work for researchers in race and ethnicity. Recommended for research and large public libraries.-- Ro deric A. Camp, Central Coll., Pella, Ia. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

This dictionary is essential for any library that has Hispanic patrons or users who read or listen to even a smattering of Spanish: in today's multicultural environment, almost every academic library should own this book. It is a wonderfully comprehensive compilation of racial and ethnic terms, both in Spanish and Portuguese, although of course the Spanish is what most reference librarians will find most useful. Stephens has carefully researched such terms from all Latin American countries, producing a work that will stand both as a scholarly linguistic contribution and as a popular reference work for the many words excluded from traditional dictionaries either because they are offensive or because they are slang or are unknown to the compilers. These words, however, are used in literature and popular speech, so the publication of a universal dictionary of this sort will definitely benefit libraries. Stephens is very thorough in his research, backing up his study with a long bibliography of references used to document each word. Both public and academic libraries at all levels. -D. R.
