Booklist Review

"Allergy is the body's defense system gone wrong," begins Edelson in his no-nonsense investigation of the complicated processes that can cause itching, sneezing, watery eyes, or even life-threatening respiratory distress. The author clearly defines and explains medical concepts and terms in a lead-off chapter that describes the functioning of the immune system. He then divides allergies into broad categories, looking at reactions to foods, insects, drugs, and substances on the skin, as well as asthma and hay fever. He also discusses drug and nondrug therapies and explains the controversy surrounding various treatments and tests. A brief look at current research concludes the text. Like others in the Encyclopedia of Health series, the volume is illustrated with black-and-white photographs and includes both a glossary and an index. No notes. Gr. 7-12. --Stephanie Zvirin
