Booklist Review

While Harris gives a fuller investigation of drug abuse among athletes (see Drugged Athletes, Booklist 83:1668 Jl 87), Meer, an assistant editor for Psychology Today, contributes a useful, if preachy introduction to the subject, which continues to make headlines. Using the experiences of big-name sports figures to add interest to the workmanlike text, he establishes the parameters of the problem, going on to examine how everything from caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine, to crack, steroids, and prescription drugs can affect an athlete's performance. While he offers some insights into the rationale behind drug use in the sports world, he seems more concerned with the physiological effects of abused substances. He concludes with material on drug testing and a brief rundown on what is being done by the sports community to curb the abuse. Photographs are plentiful but not always adequately captioned; there is no documentation; and the six-title bibliography pales in comparison with Harris' excellent listing. Where additional material on the subject is needed, however, consider this overview. Glossary and index appended. Gr. 7-12. SZ. 613'.71 Doping in sports [CIP] 87-753
