"This volume provides a new perspective on the work of Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928-2021), one of the most acclaimed architects working since the mid-twentieth century. Widely recognised as having transformed the urban context of São Paulo, he became the second Brazilian to win the Pritzker Prize, after Oscar Niemeyer. In this volume, a team of international scholars provides a comprehensive overview of the architect's trajectory and the collective dimension of his work, along with thematic essays. Of crucial importance is Paolo Mendes da Rocha's identity as a South American architect and his view of geography in relation to nature and culture. The essays explore Mendes da Rocha's concern with the anthropogenic effects of the continent's development as well as its colonial and postcolonial past, focusing on twelve of the architect's key buildings.
