En la búsqueda del trasfondo histórico de nuestra bandera, el autor incursionó en los móviles que llevaron a un grupo importante de puertorriqueños en las postrimerías del siglo XIX a exiliarse en Nueva York para evadir la censura, la represión y la persecución por sus ideas políticas y algunos de los clubes que se fundaron para trabajar por la independencia de la Isla, colonia española para esas fechas. Identifica a los que participaron en distintos momentos en la concepción y aceptación de la bandera, sus lazos con el periodismo, la complicidad de los cubanos y su conexión con el Partido Revolucionario Cubano, las desavenencias internas por matices ideológicos y cuestiones clasistas, y los cambios que tuvieron lugar según avanzaba la década de 1890.
