| Summary, etc. | Después de que en los primeros siglos de la Iglesia concurrieran juntos al martirio los pastores y los fieles de la Iglesia, vino una época en que la santidad pareció destacar más en obispos y monjes que en el resto de la comunidad eclesial. Pero, aun así, nunca faltaron seglares que brillaron por su santidad de vida, y la Iglesia no dudó en incluirlos en su calendario. En este libro nos fijamos en aquellos hombres y mujeres del segundo milenio que, sin haber profesado los votos religiosos, sino permaneciendo en estado seglar, han alcanzado fama y reconocimiento de santos o beatos, y como tales son venerados en la Iglesia. Nunca han faltado, pero en este último siglo han florecido de manera especial, acorde con la renovada conciencia eclesial de que la santidad es para todos. Muy especialmente los seglares han estado presentes en las grandes epopeyas martiriales de las últimas centurias, y han dado la cara en las grandes ocasiones y problemas de la Iglesia. La llamada universal a la santidad de todos los fieles, subrayada por el Concilio Vaticano II, halla sucomprobación práctica en tantos seglares como figuran con justicia en un santoral seglar. |
