| Formatted contents note | The document The Bishop of Rome finds its origin in the invitation addressed by Pope John Paul II to all Christians to find, "together, of course", the forms in which the ministry of the Bishop of Rome "may accomplish a service of love recognized by all concerned" (Ut unum sint 95). Numerous responses to this invitations have been offered from various ecumenical theological dialogues. The Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity saw in the 25th anniversary of the encyclical Ut unum sint, as well as in the convocation by Pope Francis of Synod on synodality, an opportunity to offer a synthesis of these recent ecumenical developments. The Bishop of Rome, summarising some thirty responses to Ut unum sint and fifty ecumenical dialogue documents on subject, is the fruit of a large ecumenical and synodal consultation. It concludes with a brief proposal of the Dicastery, identifying the most significant suggestions put forward by the various responses and dialogues. |
