En Caribe China: ventana a la modernidad, José Luis Colón González recoge la historia fundacional, económica y laboral de una de las empresas de arcilla más importantes durante la industrialización de Puerto Rico a mediados del pasado siglo: la Caribe China. Gestada bajo la Operación Manos a la Obra y la Compañía de Fomento Industrial, esta fábrica suplió durante casi tres décadas vajillas principalmente para hoteles, restaurantes y entidades de Puerto Rico y el exterior, incluyendo organizaciones internacionales como la de las Naciones Unidas y muchos de los hoteles que se establecieron como parte de los esfuerzos gubernamentales para el desarrollo turístico de Puerto Rico durante la década de los cincuenta. A través de esta minuciosa investigación, sustentada con fotografías y documentos históricos, el autor examina, a partir de su establecimiento, los aportes de esta fábrica a la industria y las relaciones laborales en Puerto Rico, así como los sucesos que llevaron a su eventual cierre a finales de los setenta. En adición al recorrido histórico de esta empresa, esta nueva edición ampliada incluye un hermoso muestrario de piezas confeccionadas por la Caribe China a lo largo de su funcionamiento.--(Back cover) |
