520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The words of Yeats may aptly describe the awe and doubt and hope that permeates the minds of many Catholics today: All changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born. Most readers of this book were probably educated in preconciliar days; they grew up in a community where calm assurance prevailed: in a Church confident of its present because it had no doubts about its future. Those years of security are over. Pope John, with his charismatic sixth sense, initiated an era of updating, reform and renewal to restore the splendor and agility to Christ's Church. Inherited traditions, venerated attitudes and ancient structures are being swept aside by the tide of change. Many are disturbed. But the author of this book is not. His pioneering work before, during, and after the Council distinguishes him as one of the most respected voices for constructive renewal; but he feels that the time has come to clarify what is changeless and what is changeable in the life of the Church. That is the accomplishment of this book.
