"Habrá que esperar a mediados del siglo XIX para encontrar algunos poemas que respondan al espíritu épico que no tiene Puerto Rico como lo tienen las naciones europeas o, incluso, algunos países hispanoamericanos, como Chile, que cuenta con el extenso poema La Araucana, en el cual se observa el poeta como un texto exaltador del imperio. Este aspecto que repercute en los poemas puertorriqueños, podría haber sido la razón para ser relegados a un espacio muy limitado en la exposición histórica, preferida la actitud rebelde contra el imperio que se observa en el texto incompleto que avalaron los críticos separatistas: Agüeybaná el Bravo, de Daniel Rivera [...] Sin embargo, ya no se trata de la conquista, sino de la defensa del territorio provinciano afiliado a la Corona española, de un espíritu de fidelidad al imperio, pero, a su vez, del desarrollo de un carácter "riqueño" o "borincano" que apela a las raíces etimológicas de los nombres antiguos de la Isla -Carib o Boriquén"- para afianzar la individualidad del alma puertorriqueña"-- pages 17-18 |
