| Summary, etc. | En 1905 Edmund Husserl introdujo en su pensamiento el concepto de empatía. Entendía por tal la experiencia de la conciencia ajena y de sus vivencias, a diferencia de la experiencia que la propia conciencia hace de sí misma. Sin embargo, el primer estudio fenomenológico extenso sobre este tema es la tesis doctoral de su discípula Edith Stein. Leída en 1916, fue publicada parcialmente al año siguiente con el título 'Zum Problem der Einfühlung' (Sobre el problema de la empatía). En ella, Stein establece una distinción cualitativa de las conciencias subjetivas basándose en el contenido peculiar de sus corrientes de vivencias. Dado que esta alteridad cualitativa no le parece posible a Stein si se permanece en el yo puro, plantea implícitamente la inconsistencia de la reducción trascendental e inicia lo que será una constante de su pensamiento: la posibilidad de una lectura realista del problema fenomenológico de la constitución.
