| Summary, etc. | La historia atlántica generalmente ha sido narrada desde el punto de vista de las dinámicas imperiales europeas, los grandes virreinatos ibero-americanos o el nefasto legado de la plantación esclavista. Este libro propone una nueva veta narrativa, esbozada en torno a un espacio considerado como marginal dentro del Imperio Español, y articulada alrededor de las dinámicas que generaron los circuitos atlánticos de comercio gris y contrabando con las gentes no-hispanas. Isla Atlántica concibe a Puerto Rico como un microcosmos del mundo antillano, una sociedad híbrida, heterogénea y fluida, cuyas gentes estuvieron inmersas en los dinámicos flujos que dieron forma al mundo moderno. En estas páginas, San Juan emerge como puerto carenero, incipiente astillero y vibrante comunidad marítima; Puerto Rico, como pivote de la navegación trasatlántica; y el Caribe antillano, como bisagra vital del emergente espacio atlántico. En este sugerente texto, además, nos propone además una relectura de las notorias invasiones a San Juan del inglés George Clifford, Conde de Cumberland, y del holandés Boudewijn Hendricksz, a la vez que nos sumerge en una vertiginosa travesía poblada por aventureros, comerciantes itinerantes, marineros y tratantes de esclavos.
