"El sureste de Puerto Rico es tierra de huracanes. Por allí han entrado no pocos de los meteoros más grandes que han azotado la isla en los últimos 122 años. La ciudad de Guayama, en la que yo crecí, está situada en el corazón mismo de esa zona. Es también la cuna de Luis Palés Matos, el poeta negrista puertorriqueño. Los huracanes y la negritud son dos temas que se repiten y entrelazan en su lírica.
