Las atuneras fueron la fuerza motriz de la economía mayagüezana por varias décadas, un factor vital en la demografía del municipio, la principal fuente [de] ingresos para los sectores populares y fuentes de ganancias para la infinidad de comercios que una vez proliferaron por las calles de la ciudad. Toda esa actividad hizo de Mayagüez un entorno vibrante con bancos, instituciones financieras, tiendas y servicios de todo tipo para sus habitantes. las atuneras hicieron que la ciudad volviera a ser un centro marítimo portuario de importancia como lo fue en las décadas de 1930 a 1960, aunque por circunstancias muy diferentes. Las trabajadoras y los trabajadores de las atuneras se convirtieron en una población que no emigró, que se quedó a hacer vida social y familiar en Mayagüez, e impactó así la vida económica y las gestiones de los políticos locales por mantener a esa industria en este lado del mundo. |
