Cancel aborda la historiografía política del siglo XIX puertorriqueño desde el reto de las paradojas, la óptica de las complejidades y los laberintos propios del devenir huidizo en un contexto colonial. Integristas y separatistas no son los únicos oponentes, ni siempre lo son del todo, en un escenario minado por la política internacional ilustrada y sus aspiraciones de progreso y modernización, en contrapunto con el avance de nuevos aspirantes a la hegemonía imperial a las sombras del ocaso de otros.<br/><br/>Cancel afirma sin miedo a los claroscuros que: “Los liberales reformistas, los autonomistas, los separatistas independentistas y los anexionistas aspiraban a “liberar” a Puerto Rico de un orden que consideraban retrógrado y encauzarlo por la ruta del progreso. Poseían discursos de liberación que se apoyaban en fundamentos filosóficos similares y percibían el problema desde su peculiar ubicación de clase en el arriba social. Las diferencias que manifestaban, por lo tanto, no eran estratégicas. Las diferencias eran tácticas y culturales. Los matices de la idea de la “libertad” que los distanciaban no era un asunto de poca monta. No se ponían de acuerdo en cuanto la forma jurídica que adoptaría la “libertad” al final del camino, así como tampoco convenían en múltiples cuestiones tácticas sobre qué hacer para adelantarla y conseguirla”.<br/><br/>Con esta nueva entrega de Otra universidad, Editora Educación Emergente reafirma su compromiso con saberes que retan lecturas centenarias y proponen otros hilos al debate de la historia de Puerto Rico hoy.<br/><br/> |
