El tema de interés de este libro es el nacionalismo en la región del Caribe. Aunque hay diferencias entre cada país, hay un patrón diferencial, históricamente reconocido, entre el Caribe hispano y el resto del Caribe. El nacionalismo surgió primero en el Caribe hispano y aquí, a diferencia del resto de la región, se expresó articulando un discurso transracial. En el Caribe que habla otros idiomas, en vez de español, la expresión más típica del nacionalismo ha sido el nacionalismo negro, un nacionalismo en donde la patria se confunde con raza.<br/><br/>Explicar estas diferencias es el propósito de este libro. Se han escogido dos figuras típicas de la diversidad del nacionalismo en la región caribeña. La figura de Marcus Garvey, de Jamaica, se examina como representante de las particularidades del Caribe que se desarrolló bajo los sistemas colonialistas de los enemigos de España. Pedro Albizu Campos, de Puerto Rico, por el otro lado, se examina como representante típico de las expresiones nacionalistas en el Caribe hispánico. Garvey y Albizu, ambos representan expresiones populares sinceras y radicales de oposición al colonialismo. Las diferencias entre ellos ilustran la diversidad caribeña en el proceso de formación de las identidades nacionales. |
