Para Antonio Damasio, uno de los más prestigiosos investigadores en neurofisiología, el de separar el cuerpo de la mente, con su tesis de que pensar es igual a ser, cuando se trata justamente de lo contrario: en el principio fue el ser, posteriormente el pensar; somos, luego pensamos. Creer que las operaciones más refinadas de la mente están separadas de la estructura y del funcionamiento del organismo biológico es un error, porque el cerebro y el resto del cuerpo constituyen un organismo indisociable integrado por circuitos reguladores bioquímicos y neurales que se relacionan con el ambiente como un conjunto, y la actividad mental surge de esta interacción. Esta innovadora visión del hombre se desarrolla en un libro que es, a la vez, riguroso y accesible.
