"En los documentos oficiales del municipio de Ponce sean censos, padrones,listas fiscales, juici os verbales, oficios, cartas u otros es posible hacer un atisbo al papel desempeñado por la mujer dentro de los cambios económicos y sociales que se producen en la ciudad desde los albores del siglo XIX. Su importancia ha sido mayor de lo ue se podría suponer, sobre todo, si se toman en cuenta varios puntos: la sociedad era culturalmente de marcado sello patriarcal y machista, la mujer siempre estuvo en desventaja económica, en términos legales, estuvo subordinada y se la confinaba a los roles tradicionales de esposa, madre e hija. Tres serán los objetivos principales de este trabajo. Primero, examinar cómo la mujer fue un ente presente en los cambios que se operaron en el Ponce decimonónico. Segundo, analizar de qué recursos y cómo la mujer se valió de los mismos para ir abriendo su propio espacio. Y tercero, reflexionar sobre aquellos conflictos o situaciones que la mujer tuvo que enfrentar en su vida cotidiana y en su carrera por abrir tal espacio. Cabe señalar que este estudio se limita a la mujer de condición libre por ser mucho más fácil de seguir su huella en los documentos de la época". Contracubierta. |
