520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. As an alternative to the current practice of separating land uses into sterile en- Dimitri claves Procos pies physiatron and tor view- ing mixed land uses as a positive contribution to contemporary urban develop-ment. The book ranges from consideration of those land use practices of the past which are still in evidence in traditional urban environments to a reexamination of land use patterns in light of contemporary social, political, en-vironmental, and economic factors. Because of the multiplicity of factors that influence land use - many of which are not readily associated with land use issues and responses - MIXED LAND USE takes a highly descriptive approach. A variety of illustrated case histories that span a wide spectrum of scale and geography are included. The book is topically divided into eight chapters and opens with an historic survey of mixed land use, identifying the reasons for its gradual abandonment and presenting reasons why this historic shift should be reversed. Chapter 2 explores the role that land use can play in the new developments in leisure, education, and life styles. Chapter 3 considers the possibilities of replacing resource-consuming transportation with mixed-land-use settings that offer opportunities for action and self fulfillment --
