Entre el 1928 y el 1978, los llamados "superbloques", "superquadras", unidades habitacionales"o "caserios"- entre otros nombres que han recidido- fueron celebrados como instrumentos del progreso pues atendían la necesidad de hogares de los sectores empobrecidos por la modernidad. Hoy en día, estos complejos no sólo complejos no sólo comprometen el entramado urbano, a menudo sus comunidades se han convertido en guetos y sus significados irradian hacia todo lo que impique construcción de "vivienda social". Para unos, es el resultado de la ruina del Estado y sus políticas habitacionales; para otros, lo que ha fracasado es la tesis que asignaba a la arquitectura responsabilidades sociales que no podía satisfacer. Esta colección de ensayos aborda los resultados ambivalentes de esos inmensos laboratorios humanos. Los ensayos destacan las diferencias entre países y contextos.
