Si bien podemos encontrar ejemplos tempranos de viviendas de apartamentos que se remontan a la época romana y al medievo, es indudable que su mayor desarrollo se produjo con la Revolución Industrial. A medida que los suburbios del siglo XIX empezaron a transformarse en ciudades en toda Europa y Estados Unidos, aumentó la necesidad de construir viviendas de coste reducido que con el tiempo dieron lugar a edificios de apartamentos más lujosos, especialmente en lugares como París y Viena. Los importantes avances de la década de 1880, como las nuevas estructuras de acero ignífugas, el perfeccionamiento del ascensor y la introducción de la electricidad, estimularon considerablemente la rápida evolución de este tipo de construcciones. |
