Según Denis Dutton, los gustos y las preferencias del ser humano por las artes son rasgos evolutivos que se han ido conformando por selección natural. No son "construcciones sociales", como han defendido la crítica de arte y la teoría acadñemica del siglo XX, ni están determinados por el entorno cultural.
