Sus reflexiones sobre ética normativa ofrecen un nuevo enfoque de un tema largamente descuidado. En primer lugar, el autor se ocupa del estatuto de la ética y defiende la posición de que no existen valores objetivos, es decir que la moral no es un campo ya existente y sólo a descubrir, sino que debe ser construida continuamente. A continuación, analiza los contenidos de la ética y define la moralidad como un mecanismo funcional que es prácticamente igual a lo largo del tiempo, pero que cambia en su significación según las evoluciones de la condición humana. Mackie construye un sistema de moral práctica con una serie de elementos de las orientaciones utilitarista y absolutista, que previamente revisa críticamente en algunas de sus implicaciones. En tercer lugar, el autor explora los límites e interesecciones entre ética, psicología, metafísica, teología, derecho y política.
